Tatu City hosts Muslim business community to explore new investment opportunities

Tatu City hosted Nairobi’s Muslim business community to outline property acquisition, tax incentives and expansion options in its special eEconomic zone, highlighting new opportunities beyond traditional hubs like Eastleigh.

Tatu City on Sunday welcomed members of Nairobi’s Muslim business community for a luncheon aimed at showcasing investment and real estate opportunities within its Special Economic Zone and explaining how business owners can get involved in the projects taking shape in the area.

Organisers said the event’s goal was to provide clear guidance on acquiring property, the processes investors must follow, and the incentives available when investing in a Special Economic Zone.

During the meeting, participants attended detailed sessions that outlined investment procedures step by step.

Tax benefits

They were also briefed on the tax benefits offered to investors within the zone, including reduced tax obligations and simplified systems designed to make business operations smoother.

Many attendees said the explanations helped them understand how to expand their businesses beyond traditional commercial hubs.

The event drew hundreds of Muslims from various sectors, including business owners, professionals, and community leaders.

Senior officials, including Wajir Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed and Eastleigh North MCA Ahmedkadar Dabar, also attended, signalling growing interest in supporting new investment opportunities for the community.

Tatu City was represented by senior members of its leadership team, led by Preston Mendenhall, Group Chief Operating Officer of Rendeavour, the company behind Tatu City. Mendenhall, who also serves as Kenya Country Head, discussed the progress of development and the opportunities available for investors across commercial, industrial, and residential projects.

Project welcomes all

He told the gathering that the project welcomes people from all communities and that Muslim investors have the opportunity to establish facilities that cater to their needs, including mosques.

Mendenhall also highlighted the role played by the Muslim and Somali business community in shaping Tatu City’s growth. He cited the investment made by Maalim Weli, Chairman of Business Bay Square Mall, and said the community has become a key part of the development.

“The Tatu City Special Economic Zone is designed to give businesses a competitive global edge. We offer more than land. We invite investors to thrive with efficiency,” he said.

Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed emphasised that leaders support investment because it benefits both investors and the wider public through job creation and increased business activity. He noted that many countries are now moving towards smart city developments and encouraged the community to explore the opportunities such projects present.

Look beyond Eastleigh

Ahmed urged the Somali business community to look beyond Eastleigh, which he said has limited space for expansion, and consider Tatu City as a new area for growth.

“Smart city is the way to go these days; many countries are going in that direction. We appreciate the fact that the largest Somali real estate investment in East Africa will happen in Tatu City,” he said.

Former Senator Billow Kerrow, who also addressed the event, said he had recently visited Tatu City and observed the ongoing projects. He encouraged the Muslim community to invest in the development, highlighting that the potential return on investment could be higher than in many other areas of the country.

Kerrow noted that the area functions as a full-fledged city with business operations, manufacturing activity, and other functions that give investors a wide range of options.

“What we have seen is a city. It is not like an estate. It is a complete city with business and manufacturers,” he said.

See developments firsthand

Eastleigh North MCA Ahmedkadar Dabar called on the Muslim business community to visit Tatu City and see the developments firsthand.

He said Nairobi is working to ease congestion and that new developments like Tatu City will play an important role in providing business owners with additional space for growth.

“I urge my fellow business people and the Muslim community, and the people of Eastleigh, to visit and witness the making of the city,” he said.

The organisers concluded the session by stating their intention to continue engaging with the Muslim business community, providing updates and encouraging greater participation in upcoming developments within the special economic zone.
